An Unplugged Birthday

كنت قد حضرت نفسي للإحتفال بعيد ميلاد مدونتي اليوم والذكرى الرابعة لتأسيسها، وذلك بالتعليق على ظهوري مع بعض من زملائي المدونين في برنامج ديوانية الأسبوع والحلقة الخاصة بالمدونات التي كان من المفروض أن تذاع مساء أمس الإثنين، لكن شاءت الأقدار أن أحتفل بمنع عرض الحلقة بقرار غريب من وزير مكلف بتصريف العاجل من الأمور ولا نية لديه للرجوع للحكومة أصلاً، لحقه تبرير ضعيف لا يمت للمنطق بصلة. شعرت وكأني من متعهدي الحفلات الذين يتم إلغاء حفلاتهم الموسيقية بآخر لحظة من قبل وزارة الإعلام تحت ذريعة العادات والتقاليد وغيرها من الأعذار الزائفة

عند مراجعة زملائي الذين ظهروا معي في الحلقة الممنوعة، حاولنا أن نستذكر أقوالنا وإذا كنا قد تعدينا على أحد فلم نصل إلى شيء محدد قد يكون تسبب في منع الحلقة. لكني أدركت أيضاً أن مفهومنا لحرية التعبير يختلف تماماً عن مفاهيم الحكومة وما اعتبرناه كلاماً عادياً وما فيه زود قد تعتبره الحكومة كلاماً خطيراً يجب أن يقمع. الحكومة أعطتنا قدراً من الحرية لنقول ما نريد على مدوناتنا دون أي تبعات وأسوأ عقوبة - إلى الآن - هي أن تحجب المدونات من قبل شركات الإنترنت، لكن عندما يأتي الأمر إلى وسائل الإعلام الرسمية فيبدو أن هناك خطاً عريضاً يجب أن لا نتعداه... بالكويتي، تلفزيون أبونا... واحنا اللي نسمح أو نمنع على كيفنا

أحد المعلقين على نفس الموضوع في مدونة كله مطقوق قال أن أن المدونين الذين ظهروا في الحلقة غلب عليهم الطابع الليبرالي ولم يكن هناك تمثيل من الطرف الآخر، أي الطرف المتأسلم. يا أخي لقد كانت الحلقة تعريف للمدونات ونشأتها ولم تكن مناظرة سياسية! يبدو أن سيطرتهم على برامج التلفزيون لمدة 30 سنة لم تشبعهم

على كل حال، ومع انخفاض عدد المشاهدين لتلفزيون الكويت البائس يوماً بعد يوم أكاد أجزم بأنه لو تم عرض الحلقة في موعدها لكان عدد المشاهدين متواضعاً نوعاً ما، لكن الآن وبعد منعها فقد أثارت الفضول والرغبة بمشاهدة الممنوع وهي ردة فعل طبيعية

ما يتوبون ربعنا؟ ليلحين ما تعلموا أن كلما حاولوا قمع الآراء، تجد هذه الآراء وسيلة للظهور؟ للمرة الألف ليتهم يوفرون جهودهم ويركزون على مصلحة الكويت. ترى هالكلام قلته في نهاية الحلقة... تعالوا! لا يكون منعوا الحلقة لهذا السبب؟؟؟ أرجو أن أكون مخطيء

Here I was ready to celebrate my blog's 4th birthday today with a possible recap of our appearance on an episode about blogs on the weekly show "Diwaniat Al-Osbou3", hosted by Dr. Shafiq Al-Ghabra, that was scheduled on KTV last night, but alas... it was not meant to be. Instead KTV pulled the plug (geddit?) because apparently the topic was too hot for their liking. I felt like the Ministry of Information had cancelled my party at the last minute, like they do on with musical concerts on a regular basis under whatever bogus religious pretense.

Upon chatting with my colleagues who appeared on the show, we tried to recall if we had possibly said anything controversial that may have provoked this cancellation. None of us felt that we said much, but then I pointed out that our standards and definitions of "freedom of speech" are very different from the government's and while we may say what we want on our blogs without fear of recrimination (the worst that could happen - so far - is that some over-zealous ISP could block your blog), when it comes to the government's own media a big fat line is drawn, never to be crossed. Basically, the government feels "this is our TV station and we'll tell you what you can or can't say!"

One of the comments on Kilah Ma6goog's post on the same subject remarked that all the bloggers on the show were "liberal" and that there weren't any opposing views. To them I say, this was a show about blogs and not a political debate, as if 30 years of Islamists hogging the screens on KTV aren't enough!

In any case, with KTV's pathetically low viewership ratings, I'm betting not many people would've caught the show had it aired on schedule. Now that it's been censored, the natural reaction is, of course, more curiosity and interest.

They just don't learn, do they? The more effort you spend suppressing voices, the more those voices will find ways to be heard. The government should stop wasting its time and resources on suppressing opinions and focus on running the country. I even said that on the show.... wait a minute! Could that be the reason it got cancelled?! I hope I'm wrong!

مــن غــيــر مــبــرر

لم أكتب أو أعلق على ظهور بعض المدونين الكويتيين - من بينهم محسوبكم - وزميلهم الضيف البحريني في حلقة من برنامج ديوانية الأسبوع من تقديم الكتور شفيق الغبرا كانت مخصصة للحديث عن ظاهرة المدونات في الكويت، وذلك لأني فضلت الإنتظار حتى تبث الحلقة على الهواء وأشاهدها كاملة لأتأكد أنني لم أخربط كثيراً

لكن يبدو أن ذلك لن يحصل بعد قرار توقيف البرنامج المفاجيء... فهل تم إيقافه بسبب حلقة المدونات يا ترى؟ يبدو أننا تمادينا في الحديث حسب منظور الوزارة وضيق صدرها، وقلنا كلاماً قد لا يعجب العمام

وإلى المزيد من التراجع يا كويت... والله حسافة

Little Mosque on the Prairie

Remember "Little House on The Prairie"? Canadian TV channel CBC is now showing a parody of that classic, annoyingly wholesome show in which a Muslim family settles in the plains of Saskatchewan, Canada and struggles to fit in with the local devout Christian population.

Zarqa Nawaz, creator and writer of the groundbreaking show, insists she's an equal-opportunity satirist taking dead-aim at both Muslim and Canadian stereotypes in a post-September 11 world.

"I expect both groups will be wondering if the other finds the show funny," says Nawaz. There are predictable jokes about Muslim beliefs clashing with Canadian traditions. In one scene, a father wearing a kufi, or a knitted cap worn by devout Muslims, protests that his Canadian-born daughter wearing a revealing tank top looks "like a Protestant."

"Don't you mean prostitute?" the daughter asks.

"No, I meant a Protestant," the father replies.

In another scene, a young man of Middle Eastern origins with a Canadian accent is heard in an airport check-in line telling his mother via cell phone that his father shouldn't think his choosing to stop being a Toronto lawyer to become an imam in Saskatchewan amounts to career "suicide."

"This is Allah's plan for me," the young man says in passing, before an arresting cop appears suddenly and tells the surprised lawyer that he won't be making that appointment in Paradise.
