Good write-up, Zaydoun.

Last year they showed the political comedy by Albert Brooks COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD - that film would have been banned here. This year they are showing BOBBY an all-star cast movie set on the eve of the Robert Kennedy assasination. They are making inroads every year and have already eclipsed - by far, in my opinion - the Cairo film festival.

Trust me - and I have experience in the entertainment sector and have watched Dubai's festival from its inception - the Dubai Film Festival will one day be up there with the Cannes Film Festival.

All the gulf countries now are overtaking us in different ways. No one can ridicule Qatar or Bahrain anymore - they are on the right track and investing in the country, liberalizing their laws etc. Even culturally look at Qatar - their opening ceremony of the Asian Games rivalled if not excelled any major Disney-like event in the West.

The Gulf countries are hungry. Hungry to be #1, hungry to make money, hungry to excel.

Kuwait is more interested in hosting unlimited conferences, forming committees, and talking about what needs to be done but not really doing anything.

Decades down the road we will refer to the era we are currently living through in Kuwait as a 'dark era,' a black spot in our history: all-time high corruption, low education standards, weak infrastructure and services, over-crowded state with low skill expatriates etc etc.

Everything the UAE is doing towards culture and showbiz is spot on. Kudos to them - that's why we have people here booking tickets to Dubai to go see CIRQUE DU SOLEIL.

With all the censorship Kuwaitis endure (cinemas, book fairs, concerts, performances etc...) you would think that we live in an angelic society where we are all God-fearing law-abiding citizens.

In Dubai, there is every type of entertainment imaginable, ideas and creativity is encouraged and everywhere there is progress and impressive standards.

We need Vision, and we need someone strong enough to lead this country towards realizing it.

You can book tix for the short film fest at Virgin...and the thing that's annoying is that we had another film fest last month and no one heard about that one either...where is the advertising for these things?

I wouldn't be surprise if the advertising is lacking either because:
a) They lack the funds
b) They're scared some lunatic fundie will shut it down!

Whoever did it is a terrorist and a moron. I don't care what denomination he belongs to. That forum has the highest IQ level I have ever seen in Kuwait! I hope they come back soon.

Any entertainment event in Kuwait deserves more advertising but I can confirm to you that organizers often advertise by word of mouth or through clandestine methods for the reason you stated:

any paranoid fundamentalist - not necessarily a government official either - will actively seek to close down any event that may conflict with his/her own interest.

A simple phone call by a "concerned" citizen has often resulted in the cancellation of such musical or entertainment events.
