DNA testing is all the rage in the USA, where people pay just $200 and send in a DNA sample by swiping a Q-tip from inside their cheeks to any of a number of DNA testing companies nationwide.
The tests have unlocked long-lost family secrets, and have helped people understand where they came from and what makes them who they are. The results have often been shocking!
What's the status of DNA testing here in Kuwait? I know there was a controversy when it was required only for the thousands of "Bidoun بدون", and I guess the idea was scrapped (was it?) but imagine if commercial DNA testing was open to anyone in Kuwait wanting to know his/her lineage..
I imagine many families would be curious, just as many families would try to suppress evidence of their perceived "less than perfect" origins.

If it were in Kuwait i'd think that when a guy proposes they'll ask for his DNA to be 100% he's aseel .. ! i wouldn't be surprised if it happens .. Ppl are so anal about this issue!

Lets leave it at that. After all it is all in the head/eye of the beholder.

Zaydoun,
You would be surprised that there is actually a lot of DNA testing that goes on in Kuwait, but not in the manner or for the reasons you described in your post. Most of it is done for forensic purposes (Ministry), to determine paternity either for the courts or for private citizens who know where to go and are willing to pay ( hospitals and research facilities), prenatally to determine the inheritance patterns of genetic disease and suceptibility of the fetus to a hereditary disease or genetic defect, or for those who suffer from infertility. Or research purposes for that matter, especially where it concerns cancer or diabetes, both of which are quite prevalent and have reached epidemic proportions in Kuwait.
I don't anticipate DNA analysis being provided soon in the manner you described. Although Kuwait is definitely budding and making strides in this field, the concept is still out of reach and the capablity to provide commercial services in this manner to the public is not feasible - or wise when there are other dire concerns - at the moment.
But what a pity if it were available for such a purpose! And how redundant, since frankly, Kuwaities- no matter how "blue-blooded" - and I use that term very loosely - all come from somewhere around the Gulf, and their origins are quite recent. I, for one find the notion of Kuwaiti blue-bloodedness laughable.
You are right though, I can imagine the social pandemonium that would occur, when Iflan Al-Iflany finds out his ancestors were indeed plain old sheep-herders who came looking for a greener pasture from Saudi Arabia, just like the guy who came from Iran or Iraq...

Thanks Zaydoun for bringing up this discussion about a kuwaiti taboo (is it anymore?)
Regarding DNA tests:
I second what Ms.Baker said. A friend's father works in this field, and what did he get? threats & black mail!
He chose to work abroad.
Regerding Origins:
Kuwaitis root back from every single country of Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Zanzibar, Balkan and even Morocco.
Their ancentors -as well- worked in numerous jobs from rulers & prophets to you-name-it... so I think the best way to settle all this is to say:

At the end of the day its all about the dollar. Nobody in Kuwait would give a shit about authenticating others' roots otherwise. Nothing to be proud of if your ancestors were nomadic tribes from here or there. Ones this older generation dies off nobody will give a shit.
5/2/06 12:08 AM
poiwer !!
some keep saying that no one cares about authenticating others' roots or checking their "asil" anymore and its all about money, we both know thats not true ! ,,, people still ask about the asil even more than before ! actually my parents say that before they were taught it was "3aib" to talk about asil in public specially infront of "beyasir" and now the "beyasir" is actually who bring this issue up !!! this is our society , why cant you just live with it and accept it the way it is ?!

5/2/06 1:30 AM

dulsinea (love the song of that name)
There is a correlation between level of education and how much the person shows off his/her roots
Bragging about one's roots is the last resort for those who have nothing else to show for themselves. Here it's especially galling because they they are Habsburgs and Medicis, when they're really closer to the Hatfields and McCoys!
5/2/06 5:30 PM
Zayodoun, I hope my commentary on this post is not too late, but I just want to say BLESS YOUR PRETTY LITTLE HEART for bringing it up.
Dude, I wrote a parody on the whole asal thing on inkaleidoscope.blogspot.com and people started tearing me up left and right. I wasn't even serious, I was merely poking fun at the whole asal mumbo jumbo. Hell, I'm of Najdi origins, but I still think this whole asal thing is a relic of the past and is only used by useless losers who have no accomplishments to speak other than the number of dead grandparents they have that are buried in Kuwait. As a matter of fact, the word bayseri is of Farsi origin meaning without head.
No one appreciated what I said bsck then, so thanks for bringing up the issue again. It's nice to know I am not alone in my beliefs.

Just went to see your post. I'm glad I didn't allude to the subject in a work of satire like you did but instead went straight for the jugular. Maybe that's why there hasn't been much of a backlash. Yet!
The WORST and MOST OFFENSIVE comment on your story was by Anonymous (of course) who casually told Jewaira that reading her blog led him/her to conclude that there is no way she is "Aseela".
The arrogant prick/bitch! That's what bugs me the most!! Not just taking exaggerated pride in one's roots but casually assuming that certain behaviors are only typical of "others".
If only you knew what some of عيال الحمايل get up to when nobody's looking!
6/2/06 12:34 AM
Brilliant entry(as always)Zed!
But please don't give THEM any ideas. It was bad enough the last time when THEY most casually decided to go along with finger printing the whole of Kuwait; third country nationals, included.
You would naturally, imagine DNA finger printing to be the next (ill)logical step forward for PACI. Just think how THEY could share everybody's DNA maps with the health insurance geezers, who would then gladly take you out to the cleaners; imposing over the top health care premiums.
And what to say of maintaining anonymity of patient records?!
