Pious and Corrupt
I don't know whether we should be heartened by the fact that corruption among politicians who claim to be religious and pious is not confined to our region... Over in the good old US of A.. it's reaching epidemic proportions as a number of "moral values" politicians, both Christian and Jewish, are exposed in a series of scandals, as the greedy, power-grabbing monsters they really are..
The parallels to Kuwait are scary. Here's an excerpt:
"The values alleged so far in this scandal - greed, hypocrisy, favor-selling, dissembling - belong to no creed except the ruthless pursuit of power. They are not exclusive to either political party. But the religious trappings add a note that distinguishes these creeps from those who have come before: a supreme righteousness that often spirals into anger and fire-and-brimstone zealotry that can do far more damage to America...."
The article may require registration to read, but it should appear on the IHT site very soon.

You know, Zaydoun, I read the article, but it didn't provide any insight on corruption, as we in Kuwait are far more expereinced in this issue. We have parliament members that stand against co-education, and yet send their kids to private schools. We have parliament members that are horrified by the promiscuous ways of women who do not wear hijab and yet have no qualms about posing in a "sexy red pair of shorts" for the press! I was recently informed by a friend who used to work at the National Assembly that many Islamists
What this article sadly portrays, however, is that even in nations that separate Church and State, faith is still used to manipulate the masses into submission. Sad, sad, sad.

Mushmushi... you reminded me of something I read by Thomas Paine, in the introduction to his book "The Age of Reason", written in 1794!!. Whether I agree with him or not is not the point, but it does make one think.. Note that he uses the phrase "Turkish Church" in reference to the Ottoman Empire (i.e. Islam)
"I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.
I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow-creatures happy.
But, lest it should be supposed that I believe in many other things in addition to these, I shall, in the progress of this work, declare the things I do not believe, and my reasons for not believing them.
I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.
I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe"
OUCH!!

Pious and Corrupt= Oxymoron!
But ya3ni basically they're Hypocrites.
Anyway, this article works nicely in conjunction with my latest post.
I found this line to be particularly pertinent:
"..a supreme righteousness that often spirals into anger and fire-and-brimstone zealotry that can do far more damage.."
Please check it out Zaydoun :) (although I should warn you it's not a "fun" read) :P Anyway your input would be appreciated.

kuwait passion..

Your choice to quote Thomas Paine is interesting - are we hinting for a revolution Zaydoun ;)

I think the problem is with montheistic religions(Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and HInduasm to a certain extent), we are the only people who use religion to be violant.
The issue here is that we think our faith makes us superiour, and as long as we beleive in one God, then we can be SOCIALY FAULTY, as long as we pray and fast etc, because of the afterlife reward.
... when choosing house maids, we reject anything with a religion, especially Islam, thats the case, at least at my home.

Kuwait Passion,
I agree that the liberal leadership in Kuwait is not very well organized today. However, I strongly disagree with placing the blame solely on the older generation. The young generation can easily forget their "Passion" when it comes to actual manual work, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the selflessness of GROUP work where it is not easy for the INDIVIDUAL to SHINE.
I agree that liberal organizations tend to be poor in numbers. What HAS to be noted here is the insistence of some, usually younger generation liberals, to work independently, to satisfy their own ego and to gain the "independent candidate" label for their own personal gain, not thinking of the greater good of the values they allegedly aim to uphold.
The examples here are countless; the blows dealt to the liberal movement, and the failures resulting from such selfish behavior are even greater.
I agree that alTALEEA and the RULING POST are both important cornerstones of Kuwaiti politics. However, I do not think that alTALEEA and the RULING POST hold equal responsibilities in public administration! Internal disputes in the SABAH family over the administration of the country affect all of us directly, and are a matter of NATIONAL INTEREST and utmost concern. There personal feuds in the SABAH family that are driving the country down the drain. I doubt that the administrative shortcomings that you claim exisit in alTALEEA have the same effect on Kuwait.
How is the administration of the MAGAZINE compared to the administration of the COUNRY?!
While alTaleea ARE doing something to improve the corrupt status quo of the country, and while the Taleea administration would ADRESS any shortcomings and WORK on them, alSabah family leaders INDULGE shamelessly in their corruption.
Last but not least, if it wasn't for the "cowards" of the sixties, you wouldn't have the LIBERTY of getting online, entering this blog, and finally posting your comments.
I come from the "younger generation." Let us not displace our own shortcomings on those who spent their entire lives creating the environment in which we have the LIBERTY to continue what they had started such a long time ago, and the LIBERTY to CHOOSE not to!
Sorry for the long post?wa lakin lil 7adeeth baqiyya...
