The messages posted by many, shows the extent of fear and hate bottled up in em. Again, I am not affiliated with any islamic organization, but why not try to tolerate it, or think of it as writing on the wall. After all we live in a semi-democratic Islamic society therefore, tolerance of others and their opinions is a must ( to a certain extent) in order for us to crystilize into a fully democratic society. y3ny el message mafeeha shay eykhawef its not telling you to strap a bomb around your waiste and explode it into a heavy foot traffic areas.

Nobody is objecting to the actual words themselves.. but this amounts to "Islamist Graffiti" on public property. I mean they even took the trouble to get a calligrapher خطاط to do the job!

I am an advocate of human rights and freedom, whatever they are, as long as they confirm to the law. In a sense that if one does a certain act he is 1)not breaking the law i.e. not physically or verbally, hurting or insulting another human being; 2) not damaging nor desecrating public property without a legal permit to do so. I disagree with Jashanmal about showing tolerance to such issues. Not only because the other party does not tolerate my liberal ideas, but because there is a fine line between tolerance and capitulation.
I am willing to tolerate. I AM NOT willing however, to submit to this party, to its unlawful exercises, and surrender my convictions, my rights and my love, of and for, life and beauty. I will not be brain washed.
Our Prophet said "Khair el o'moor aw9a6oha" and God said, through his Holy Book, "Lakoum deenakom w liya deen".

Well... not exactly, Mosan. As an experiment, lets try and put up a message that said "Political Rights for Women" for example.. Yes it would be wrong and it is defacing public property but will it go unpunished like this one?

Hey Zaydoun,

Great blog. Just a pity that the Arabic parts completely escape me. Still, that is my fault, as a Westerner in Kuwait I should be making more of an effort. Changing the subject now... I live in MaK and had the opportunity to witness the local police force doing their thing this morning. They are doing a great job and deserve our respect. I have in the past been quick to make comments about the 'lazy police sleeping in their cars' etc. etc. etc. but being close to the action this morning has completely changed my view of local law enforcement. I have always felt extremely safe in this country and really do enjoy my time here (although I can't often have a quality glass of wine out of a bottle rather than a bladder, get totally ripped off by bookshops selling magazines for three times the price that they are in Europe and there are loads of pages missing.. ok deviating again, but you get my point...).

Hi Zaydoun, I've been reading all the comments here and there something which I don't understand, who are these people who were given nationality? I seem to recall that Kuwait has a hang on granting Kuwaiti nationalities even to the 'Bedoun' people who have at least traditionally been living there? Please excuse my ignorance, I tried looking up the subject but always came up that it was Kuwaiti Islamic militants ( obviously because they have a Kuwaiti jnssiyah) so can you please give me a briefing on this tajniss thingy ?

After reading the comment's here, i sort of figured out what was written, some extremist graffitti i guess.

Zaydoun said...

Patrick.. long time no see. The grafitti is not so much extremist as it is just a simple prayer that does not belong on that transformer.

First of all I would like to indicate that you are making a mountain out of a mole-hill! Seriously, it's a du3aa. Are you that scared? In the words of a wise woman I knew...." TAKE A CHILL PILL"

Another explanation to why the religious words are on the blank spaces is that it prevents kids from writing profanity on these spots. The 3gaidy kid will think twice before he writes the "K" word or the "G7" word on a wall that has God's name on it. In brief, this is a stategy that has been implemented by the baladiya (municipality) to prevent people from defacing the walls with swear words!
.....would you prefer profanities or something that reminds you of God?

I personally choose the latter ;-)

"Ala bi thikr allah ta6ma2in al quloob!"

7/2/05 7:36 PM

Zaydoun said...

The Baladia has no such policy; I don't know where you heard that.. unless you mean a policy of cowardice towards Islamist vandalism and defacing of public property!

No I dont want to see profanities and thats not the point, I don't want to see prayers on transformers either, because they don't belong there written in black marker pens!!

Read the ayat from 8 to 24 in surat al baqara
get a sense of who you might be and try to correct that
